Kabir Khan: The Director Who Made Me a Salman Khan Fan
Kabir Khan is the filmmaker who really made me appreciate Salman Khan’s superstar charm. With Ek Tha Tiger and especially Bajrangi Bhaijaan, he showed how Salman’s larger-than-life persona could be used to tell touching and meaningful stories. In Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman played a pure-hearted, morally upright character who reminded us that humanity is beyond religion, borders and politics. It was one of his most memorable performances, perfectly balanced by Kabir’s storytelling.
Tubelight: A Story About Faith
Tubelight seems to be cut from Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s own clothes. This time, Salman plays the role of Laxman Singh Bisht, an innocent man nicknamed Tubelight because he is slow to catch on. Set in a small town in Kumaon during the Sino-Indian War of 1962, the film follows Laxman’s journey to bring his brother Bharat home safely after being sent to the war front.
Inspired by Little Boy
The film is inspired by the 2015 Hollywood film Little Boy. In that film, an 8-year-old boy tries to bring his father back from World War II and hold on to his faith. In Tubelight, the child is replaced by a child-like man, and Gandhi’s teachings replace the biblical text. However, this change doesn’t quite work. Salman and Sohail Khan, in the roles of brothers, look misplaced. At one point, someone calls Laxman “Yeh Ladka”, but it is difficult to see him as a young man.
The city in the film looks like a perfect fairy tale where everyone is kind and problems are mild. Laxman’s confrontation with the goon of a local troublemaker played by Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub also lacks intensity. The setting, though charming, seems too sweet to be true.
Beautiful to Look at But Emotionally Weak
The film is visually stunning thanks to Asim Mishra’s cinematography. The scenic mountains and battle scenes are also beautifully captured. Salman’s performance as Laxman shows his honesty – he sheds his superstar image to play a vulnerable and innocent man. But his performance falters in emotional moments. His character also doesn’t grow much, which makes the story repetitive.
The second half of the film feels slow and drawn out. Without a strong character journey or fast-paced plot, it struggles to keep you engaged.
The Best Moments
Laxman’s interaction with young actor Matin Ray Tangu, who plays his friend Guo, is one of the most touching parts of the film. Their bond feels genuine and adds warmth to the story. Zhu Zhu, the Chinese actress, looks pretty but doesn’t leave much of an impression. The movie misses an opportunity to explore deeper themes like racism and instead focuses on overly sweet scenes between its characters, Liling and Laxman.
A Story With Good Intentions
Tubelight tries hard to convey a message about faith and hope, but falls short of being truly emotional or engaging. While the heart of the movie is in the right place, the storytelling feels flat and overly sentimental.
That said, it’s still great to see the late Om Puri on screen, and Pritam’s radio song gets stuck in your head. The spectacular views may even inspire you to plan a trip to the mountains.
Tubelight has its moments, but it never shines brightly enough to leave a lasting impression.
