Movie Plot, Story And Review
The incident occurred on February 27, 2002. Around 1,700 people, including pilgrims and karsevaks, were returning from Ayodhya when their train stopped at Godhra Junction, four hours later than scheduled. The pilgrims had visited the city for a ceremony called Purnahuti Maha Yagna. As the train was leaving the platform, someone pulled the emergency chain, causing the Sabarmati Express to stop near a signalling point. This led to an attack by a group of people.
Around 2,000 people started throwing stones at the train and then set fire to four of the coaches. Sadly, 59 people, including 27 women and 10 children, were trapped inside the train and died in the fire. Another 48 people were injured.
Many believed that the attack was revenge for the 2002 Gujarat riots, which had affected Godhra and other parts of Gujarat. More than 1,000 people were killed in the riots, thousands were left homeless and property worth crores of rupees was destroyed.
In 2003, the Concerned Citizens Tribunal said that the fire was an accident. In 2004, when Lalu Prasad Yadav became Railway Minister, he asked former Supreme Court judge Umesh Chandra Banerjee to investigate the incident. His report claimed that the fire was an “accidental fire”. But, in 2008, the Nanavati-Mehta Commission report suggested that the burning of the Sabarmati Express was part of a “planned conspiracy”.
