Singham Again Review: Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again: Proving That More Action Doesn’t Equal More Impact

Lately, Hindi cinema seems stuck in creativity. Desperate to fill theatres, filmmakers are pulling every trick out of the hat – appealing to themes like nationalism, religion, regional pride and meta-commentary. In Singham Again, director Rohit Shetty adds his trademark car-flipping stunts to the mix, blending his sunken cop universe with the Ramayana legend. But instead of a compelling narrative, we get a fragmented parade of cameos and frustrating shootouts—more cop-out than cop story.

The film opens with Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgan) in Kashmir, who seems to have traded the Western Ghats for the snowy peaks. Before the first action sequence, we are introduced to a SOG commando (a possible reference to SPG), stepping out of a police van in full gear as Singham explains his powers to a journalist. As Singham moves through scenic Kashmir, the aerial shots look more like a tourism promo than a movie setting.

Before long, a masked biker – bad news in any action movie – starts asking her out. In echoes of the Pulwama attack, Singham was attacked by an SUV. As bullets from the AK-47 rip through his car, he quietly gets out, unscathed and takes down each attacker effortlessly. The scene is tense but lacks real suspense, because it’s all so predictable.

After this extended chase and a monologue about “Naya Kashmir”, we meet the villainous Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff), the terrorist-turned-drug lord last seen in Suryavanshi. Then came a new enemy, Arjun Kapoor, nicknamed “Danger Lanka” (Zuber). To take him down, Singham assembles an elite multi-state task force known as the Shiva Squad.

On the personal front, Singham’s wife, Avni (Kareena Kapoor Khan) has quit her salon job from Singham Returns and is now organizing a nine-day Ram Leela program as part of her Culture Ministry work. This subplot mainly serves to draw mythological parallels between Singham’s journey and the Ramayana.

The character development in Singham Again is behind the cameo. Deepika Padukone has a cameo appearance as Shakti Shetty or “Lady Singham”. Her attempt at chaotic, eccentric energy resembles that of Ranveer Singh, but her character quickly fades from the story, only to return for the final showdown.

A highlight in this otherwise serious affair is Ranveer Singh’s Simmba. His wit and irony bring some much needed lightness and humor. All the characters refer to Singham as their mentor, but he never expects the legendary feat.

Singham Again leans heavily on religious imagery, Idols and pictures of Shiva are practically everywhere, and every appearance of Arjun Kapoor’s character “Raavan!” With the lyrics of the finale, the film feels like a collection of celebrity appearances thrown together to make up for the lack of a real story. As the story progresses, Ravi Kishan’s character sums up the film’s approach: “No matter what happens, this Ram Leela will not stop.”

Movie Budget

The film made a big impact globally, surpassing ₹220 crore in collections, becoming one of the top grossers of 2024. This is the fourth film this year to achieve such a milestone, following hits like Fighter, Shaitaan and Stree 2.

Singham Again was made with an impressive production budget of around ₹350-375 crore. Given its strong box office performance and consistent audience turnout, industry experts predict that the film will recover its entire production cost by its second week. If the momentum continues, Singham Again will not only break its budget but also earn significant profits, cementing its place as one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema this year.
