Chandni Chowk To China Review
Chandni Chowk To China Should Have Been a Hit, But Flopped
Akshay Kumar’s 2009 film Chandni Chowk To China, starring Deepika Padukone, was supposed to be his first ₹100-crore hit. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a complete flop. In a recent interview, director Nikkhil Advani spoke openly about the failure and shared a shocking story about a journalist who had criticised him publicly. The journalist stood outside his house and said, “This is where Nikkhil Advani, the man who wasted your money, lives. Throw stones at his house.”
In the Cyrus Says podcast, Nikkhil explained that after Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi crossed the ₹100-crore mark, people thought Akshay’s film would be next. Chandni Chowk To China had high expectations, but it was a miserable failure. He even joked that Warner Brothers chief Blaise Fernandez was planning to buy a luxury car before the film’s release, but settled for a smaller car later. The film was Warner Bros.’ first Hindi production.
Harsh Criticism After The Film’s Failure
After the film flopped, Nikkhil faced a backlash. He said a reporter stood outside his house with a crew, pointing to his apartment and telling people to throw stones. “It was a crazy time,” he said. Years later, the same reporter ended up working for someone connected to Nikkhil’s production company. “I didn’t bring it up when I met him. My self-esteem prevented me from saying anything,” Nikkhil added.
Why The Film Didn’t Work
Nikkhil admitted that he knew the film had problems. “The second half had a lot of issues and I tried to resolve them, but there were too many people taking decisions. The producer, Rohan Sippy, avoided discussions, Warner Brothers had their ideas, Akshay had his and I had mine. Too many opinions ruined the film,” he said.
