Varisu Movie Review: Vijay and Rashmika’s Varisu is a Solid Business Match
The story is about Rajendran (Sarath Kumar), a wealthy businessman who pits his sons against each other to find the right person to take over his business. His first two sons, Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam), are eager to take over and follow their father’s orders blindly. However, the third son, Vijay (Vijay), does not agree with his father’s ways and stays away. When Rajendran realises that he does not have much time left, he sees his sons for what they really are and chooses Vijay as his successor. This decision leads Jai and Ajay to join forces with their enemy, Jayaprakash (Prakash Raj). Will Vijay be able to prove himself as the right heir and bring the family back together?
Varisu starts off slowly, with scenes that seem out of place and disconnected from the rest of the story. The emotional moments with the mother are not very strong, and the scenes between Vijay and Jayasudha feel a bit like TV commercials. Still, these moments catch our attention because they seem to reflect the real problems rumoured between the film’s star and his parents.
Overall, the film feels like a Telugu version of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, but with a corporate setting instead of a gangster backdrop. There are slow moments, like the argument between Vijay and Rajendran, which happens in the beginning. Even the intermission doesn’t bring much excitement.

Varisu grossed Rs 178.14 crore in India and Rs 297.55 crore worldwide. It was released alongside Ajith’s Thunivu, which grossed Rs 121.87 crore in India and Rs 200 crore worldwide. Though reviews were mixed, Varisu was seen as Vijay’s last film before he planned to enter politics.
Varisu grossed Rs 178.80 crore nett in India (Rs 210.98 crore gross), which includes the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions. Overseas, it grossed Rs 90 crore gross.
Varisu is a fun family drama with good music and strong performances from the lead actors. The first half is filled with nice family moments while the second half showcases Vijay’s signature mass moments, dance numbers and an emotional climax.
While both the films had their own appeal, Varisu was the clear winner during the Pongal 2023 season. Even after 50 days, it had more screens than Thunivu, proving its better performance at the box office.
